I've learnt that it is important that we have many outlets in life — each one providing us with a different kind of experience. After learning about the animal cruelty that goes into paints, brushes, and most traditional art materials, I threw my old supplies away and started on a new journey of ‘Vegan Art,’ an initiative that has since guided my practice.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I use vegan, raw materials to create my own pigments. First, I prime my canvas with vegan gesso derived from plant fibers, an alternative to the animal glues of traditional primers. I then create my own pigments and turn them into paints using natural binders. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This change has taught me to be aware of the implications that result from my actions; when I realized I was actively using supplies that are linked to animal cruelty, I educated myself on the topic and worked hard to change my habits. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
