Fluidity

In David Foster Wallace’s speech “This is Water”, he recounts a tale of two young fish swimming in the water. The young fish are approached by an older fish who asks them what the water is like on that day, and the younger fish are confused, “what is water?” they wonder. The ripples embody consciousness and the active agency people hold in affecting surroundings, what otherwise could just be still unquestioned water. The fluidity in the piece conveys a serenity, acknowledging that consciousness is not so much a disturbance as it is a natural procession
