When I was layering lava rock, pumice, lapis lazuli pigment, and gold powder, I was trying to see which would dominate the surface.
A social experiment if you will; different predators yet only one will reign supreme.
In the case of this painting, the gold emerged through the black’s steady presence and the blue’s blending nature. It is ironic because I expected the black to dominate. I’d like to think that the gold showing through in this painting is somehow a metaphor for life—that the gold light will always show through the darkness of days.
